John VIII Xiphilinos

John VIII Xiphilinos
   Patriarch of Constantinople (qq.v.) from 1064-1075, jurist; friend of Michael Psellos and John Mauropous (qq.v.). Prior to his appointment as patriarch he was the first president (nomophylax [q.v.]) of the law school created by Constantine IX (q.v.); then he fell out with the emperor (q.v.) and was forced to retire to a monastery. Constantine X (q.v.), followed the recommendation of Psellos and called him back to service as patriarch in 1064.
